When Restaurant Marvin opened in Fall '07 surrounded by a lot of anticipation, Jamil got in on the ground floor.

But it was a Monday.

I can't pinpoint when it happened, but maybe that's because it was so subtle. A slow Monday night gradually morphed into the most soulful, funky and eclectic party in town. There was no promotion, no advertising and no fanfare. Even before the City Paper article, The Main Ingredient was a phenomenon born of word of mouth.

Where else in the city can you party HARD to The Police, Chubb Rock, Glenn Underground, Rare Essence and J*DaVeY all in the same set?

It's a DJ's dream come true to be able to rock a dancefloor consistently with records you believe in. It's fitting that the diligence of a DC veteran like Jamil has been rewarded with a vibrant weekly party full of like-minded souls. Let's not take it for granted.

The Soul Controllers would like to thank Marvin's dedicated party-goers for supporting DJ Jahsonic and the staff and ownership of Marvin for providing a space for The Main Ingredient to flourish. If you know someone who wasn't there on this INSANELY fun night, please pass on the goods.

18th Anniversary Blowout: The Whole Shebang

We kept it intimate, like an old school basement house party. It was fitting in that way, because after all these years of doing what we do, bombast on a large scale really wasn't needed. It was simply about the music and our fam. Ill Vibe Collective came through and showed out. Joy Jones took the people to church. And DJ Book rocked a public set with the squad for the first time since... I can't really remember. Kaiser Soze indeed.

DJ M3 - Hip Hop, R&B (explicit)

A random treat popped up in my inbox today. DJ M3, the artist formerly known as DJ Dominator (one of the cats who started all this Soul Controller isht, son!!) hit me with a little "mix piece" that I was advised I could spread around if I felt so inclined.

This is one of the cats who I patterned my training wheel dj skills after when I was but a naive hip-hop addicted college freshman. Hopefully I can persuade him to slide us some more joints to feed the podcast. Watch this space, there might also be a DJ M3 mix cd in the making.

For now, enjoy this little retro hip-hop and R&B snack. Rude words contained within, don't play at work without headphones!
