The Soul Controllers* (also known as 'the SoulCeez') are a Washington, DC based collective who have distinguished themselves in live performances, nightclub engagements, mixtapes and music production while still maintaining a prime focus on broadcasting excellence.

Our main radio outlet, 'The Soul Controller Mixshow', re-launched on XM Satellite Radio in April 2002 but had its humble beginnings in 1991 on WMUC 88.1 FM at the University of Maryland, College Park. The 'O.G.' Soul Controllers - DJ Shortcut, DJ Dominator, The 'J', and DJ Van Dan - created the blueprint for what was then dubbed 'The Assault on Commercial Rap Radio'. The Soul Controller Mixshow, despite the limitations of WMUC's tiny signal, became known as a DC hip-hop institution and one of the best hip-hop radio programs nationwide that championed the voice of the underground as mainstream radio's offerings dwindled in variety.

As the landscape of hip-hop music gradually evolved and the current active Soul Controller roster rotated in, we subtly adjusted our goals and expanded our activities. We ended our stint at WMUC in 1999 and ushered in our 'grown folks hip-hop' programming concept, something that echoes in the hearts of any hip-hop fan with tastes too demanding for the thousands of esoteric independent records on the scene and too discerning for most mainstream hip-hop. It is a concept that reflects where we are personally as older (late 20's, early 30's) hip-hop heads that refuse to give up on the culture that we grew up on.

We are committed to creating and propogating quality hip-hop music based on originality and substance. We are also not just b-boys at heart but lovers of black music in general, always exploring the connections between hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz and dance music of all eras. The Soul Controllers are poised to help shepherd into the future the cultures that molded us.
