I make a point of keeping track of anniversaries and birthdays, and for the most part, I do pretty well at it... but this? This is like forgetting my own birthday.
The first broadcast of "The Soul Controller Mixshow" was 14 years ago, at 6pm on the third Friday of September, on 88.1 fm WMUC, on the campus of the University of Maryland. We've done some pretty big things to mark the occasion over the years, but in recent years we've kinda been slipping. In 2001, we were barely a week past 9/11; no one really felt like partying. In '02 and '03, when we were on XM, we had some plans in motion, but a few things staggerred our progress, and squashed our idea. Last year around that time, we were just getting involved in the top-secret plan to bring "Decipher" to WPFW. That's okay, though... If I have anything to say about it, we won't bojangle on the big 1-5.
I first heard the show in the fall of '92, when I came home from college for Thanksgiving... My boy Lex told me that this kid Dan, who we'd gone to high school with (Eleanor Roosevelt c/o '92, bammas!), was doing a hip-hop show on the radio. It was one of the dopest things I'd ever heard. I was instantly hooked. It was '96 before I started working on the show, and it's been a huge honor-- one of the few things that's been a constant in my world... getting a chance to hear the best music, spun by the some of the tightest DJs ever... it's way too cool, and after all these years, I'm still not over it.
Anyways, Happy Anniversary Soulceez-- Dominator, Shortcut, The J, Van Dan, Book, Stylus, Mr. Elite, All-Star, Jahsonic, L-Boogie, and everyone who's helped make the show the world's flyest year after year since 1991, from WMUC to Flava 1580 to XM to WPFW-- thanks a million, from y'all's biggest fan.
